How do you change the background of a memorial photo?

Lift the person out of the photograph, then put white, a plain color or a quiet scene behind them, and leave the face exactly as it was. Our memorial photo editor does this in your browser, free to try, with a brush for any edge it gets wrong and nothing uploaded.

Four steps

The usual reason to change a background is what the photograph happened to catch: a kitchen, a party, a hospital room, other people cut off at the edge.

  1. Open the photograph in the editor. JPEG, PNG and iPhone HEIC photographs all open. The photograph is read by your own browser and never uploaded.
  2. Let it find the person. The editor separates the person from what is behind them automatically. Hair, and shoulders against a busy background, are where it most often needs help.
  3. Fix the edges by hand. A brush puts back anything it cut off, such as a hand or the edge of a hat, and removes anything it left behind, such as the back of a chair.
  4. Choose what goes behind them. Nothing, which prints as white paper; a plain color; a ready-made scene; or a picture of your own. A scene or your own picture can be moved and zoomed behind the person.

Which background to choose

White is the safe choice. It is what print shops expect, it suits any frame, and it never competes with the face.

A plain soft color, such as a warm grey, cream or pale blue, looks deliberate in a frame and hides a rough edge better than white does.

A scene suits the easel print, where the portrait is seen from across the room. The ready-made ones are lake at sunset, mountain sunrise, soft clouds, forest light, autumn woods, candle, morning meadow and river light. Keep it quiet: the background is there so the face has nothing to compete with.

Why the face is not redrawn

Asking ChatGPT or an AI portrait app to change a background regenerates the whole picture, face included, and the face can come back subtly changed. The editor here cuts the person out instead. Only the pixels behind them change.

What it costs

Editing, the print-size check, the background and the enlargement are free, and so are watermarked downloads to see the result. The clean full-size files for that photograph, every frame size in one ZIP for the print shop, are $12 once, with no account and no subscription.
